Start Early and Keep Going
Engineering Safety Management is not a task to be picked up ‘as and when’—it is an ongoing process that requires consistency. Failing to apply a controlled approach to safety could lead to non-compliances to regulation, standards, and requirements, at key project milestones, potentially resulting in delays, increased costs, and assessment bodies and approval boards unable to issue supportive statements of compliance.
To show that your project is in control, consider these key steps:
• Know your scope. Generate and maintain a clear System Definition document.
• Develop a detailed Safety Management Plan and keep it updated.
• Conduct regular project safety reviews.
• Hold formal Hazard Record Review Panels.
• Discuss safety topics in Interdisciplinary Design Checks and Reviews.
• Engage early with assessment bodies and provide regular updates.
• Create a high-level visual programme of key assurance submission dates (including those of your assessment bodies) and communicate it effectively.
• Identify and document on-site commissioning tests.
• Ensure resources are competent in engineering safety management.
Managing your Hazard Record consistently is also critical. By maintaining a structured approach, compliance evidence can be captured at each phase of the project, reinforcing safety throughout the design process. This ensures that hazards are identified early, eliminated where possible, or mitigated through safety requirements.
At HSRS, we have extensive experience in integrating safety into complex infrastructure systems while ensuring compliance with CSM RA and Railways Interoperability Regulations.
